Production Log

Saturday 27th April 2013
- Came up with a basic concept for the film.
- brainstormed further ideas for the imagery/scenes in the film.

Friday 3rd May 2013
- Contacted an actress to play the role in the film, giving brief explanation of the requirements of the role and availability to film.
- Researched music samples for the music in the film and put together a blog post about the possible elements I want included.
- Thought about the possibility of hints of dialogue in the film in a narration style, decided the dialogue will be the main explanation of the story and the music will set the mood.
- Looked at other surreal/art films.

Saturday 4th May 2013
- Created storyboards and listed ideas for the film/ scenes I want included in the film.
- Considered editing techniques I want to use in the editing process such as overlaying two scenes and what the general look and feel of the film will be. I decided black and white was the right way to go.
- Discussed in more detail with the actress about the idea of the film and scenes it will consist of, showing her images as inspiration.

Friday 10th May 2013
- Set a date and with the actress for filming the first scene of the film "the bath scene", decided on 19th May after 12:30.

Monday 13th May 2013
- Looked at bands I know that may have music I could use as opposed to having a piece composed.
- Contacted a band (Illusory Centre) about using one of their tracks in the film, asked about a similar instrumental piece to their song "MF".

Wednesday 15th May 2013
- I asked my sister about using her bathroom for the "bath scene", she has a white bath. Location confirmed.
- Illusory Centre (the band) got back to me asking about the length of the film and informing me of similar sounds they have. I asked for a sample.

Thursday 16th May 2013
- I contacted the actress with further information of the shoot that Sunday, sent her the storyboards with further detail about the story. The time was then changed to 3pm followed by being unsure whether she could make it at all due to work, I asked her to let me know as soon as possible.

Friday 17th May 2013
- Illusory Centre sent me a track for the film. After listening I decided this was the perfect piece for the film, it had the right feel and pace I was looking for.
- I booked out an edirol from college incase I wanted to record audio on Sunday.

Saturday 18th May 2013
- I contacted the actress again about the shoot on the 19th, she confirmed she could not do the shoot tomorrow.
- I risk assessed the bathroom/shoot for the 19th.

Sunday 19th May 2013
- I called my sister to inform her I would not be bringing an actress to her house to film, she volunteered to step in.
- We decided to film the "bath scene" as intended and it would at least be a test shoot until the actress was available.
- 12pm went to my sisters with my camera equipment and filmed the "bath scene".
- I had estimated it would take around 2 hours to shoot the scenes because of the complications of holding her breath underwater, her inexperience and setting up the camera.
- The bath scene was shot in 45 minutes, it took roughly 10 minutes to set the camera up in the correct position and the right height. The lighting was natural but the amount let into the room had to be increased by removing a blind to allow a good amount of light.
- We watched back the footage between takes, I thought of ways to increase the water movement and bubbles then we redid the shot, some were done again as I switched to 50 frames in order to have the option of slowing down the footage in editing.
- After filming I watched through the footage and decided that if Collette (my sister) was happy enough to do so I would like to use her as the actress instead of messing around waiting for the other girl. This allowed me to shoot easier and quicker.
- We agreed on filming at 10am on the 26th May with the intentions of filming all her scenes that day so it was finished. I did not record audio.
- I considered the technical complications of the "silhouette scene" and purchased some LED camera lights for the next shoot.
- I began editing the days footage, selecting the take  would use and changing it to black and white since I had shot in colour.
- I thought the day was really successful.

Sunday 26th May 2013
- I risk assessed and considered the health and safety for the props (mirror containing broken glass) and park.
- 10am we went to my sisters and filmed the "mirror scene", "crying scene", "window gaze/silhouette scene". The separate silhouette shot was no longer needed as I liked the composition and how the light cast on my sister in the "window gaze scene" while we were shooting.
- 2pm we went to the park and filmed the "water reflection scene". Everything requiring my sister is now shot. It was really sunny so it was hard to see the camera screen. while filming.
- I thought my sister did amazing considering she has no experience in acting and had to do quite an emotional scene. I am really happy with the progress made today and the footage after watching it back. I found directing my sister to be an easy task as she just did as I asked, no questions asked.
- I took a still from the "crying scene" and made a poster for the film in Photoshop. This seemed like the right image to use as the poster.

Tuesday 28th May 2013
- I went out and filmed some insert shots of water moving, ripples and raindrops in the pond in the park.
- I watched back the footage between takes to see how it looked and then decided what I wanted different for the next take before continuing.
- I watched back most of the footage I had filmed and decided I had everything I needed.
- I began editing down the scenes, selecting possible ones to use.
- I am happy with the filming and the fact everything is now shot and I can begin the editing process.
- I put together a very rough cut of the film so I could take a look and see what adjustments needed making, including adding the music.
-I decided the title of the film would be "Perspective" to fit with the ideas and meanings behind it.

Wednesday 28th May 2013
- I watched back the rough cut, making adjustments to clip lengths where I though necessary to make the film flow better and adding transitions.
- I adjusted the brightness and contrast on the clips to increase the tones in the shots.
- At this point I exported the film and re-watched it. I decided it did not make much sense and needed the audio to make sense of it as I had previously planned.
- I recorded audio trying both mine and my mums voice to see which fit the imagery better. I decided my mums was more fitting as he voice is more mature.

Thursday 30th May 2013
- I put some final touches on the film in terms of shot length after watching the film again and deciding a few clips were too long and a couple too short. I paid close attention to fading scenes smoothly into each other.
- I re-recoded the audio louder with my mum as it it wasn't loud enough when I played it back.

Friday 7th June 2013
- I made some last minute changes to the film image wise. I am happy with it visually.
- I put the audio into Audacity and reduced the noise, I then over-layed and repeated parts to give it a freaky/eerie sound.
- I added the audio to the film and selected where I would like the patches of audio to be, this was a long process.
- I watched the film through and decided the audio needed the volume increasing and it was too sudden so I faded it in and out.
- The film is now finished and I am very happy with the outcome.
